fantastic lecture! i graduated in ’74 with an MFA in modern dance under dr. elizabeth r. hayes. i had a terrific educational experience that truly changed my life… but as a now openly lesbian woman, this lecture brought tears to my eyes. the scholarship, vision and intellectual curiosity mixed with incredible personal integrity – moved me greatly. i am truly proud to say i received my masters from the university of utah, and can now describe this gender course as a current example of the high value truly great educators at the univ. of utah bring to all they reach – both in the classroom and through your wonderful video lecture! which i am forwarding on to some of my friends. my uncle, who is also gay (and his partner of 40 years) was a professor at st. mary’s (sister college to notre dame) and is very well read and interested in church history/sociology/gay issues. for those of us who have been “ghost children” for so long, i see hope for future generations of children to be able to find themselves and grow into productive, healthy citizens who can help eachother bring us all into a better world. thank you for taking this bold step and bringing this lecturer to an even broader audience.
Very interesting.
People develop only gradually an idea of what sexuality means. Of course they will need – as already mentioned – to identify themselves as male or female and to behave accordingly. But one must keep in mind that the training includes a gender role many things that are available only after puberty a sexual meaning.
