New Young Alumni Association Board Members

The Young Alumni Association is composed of U of U alums who graduated less than 15 years ago. There are currently 26 board members, ten of whom were recently appointed for a three-year term.

The three themes that stand out from the new members' resumes are activity, involvement, and commitment. Since leaving the U, each has built on his or her academic experience to give back to the community and to the University-a characteristic that makes the YAA a dynamic and essential part of the Alumni Association.

Currently internal communications coordinator of product development at IHC Health Plans, Kimberly (Kymba) Clawson graduated in 1998 with a B.S. in consumer economics. Her previous jobs include being a self-employed mobile disc jockey and assistant manager of the Crossroads Gap. She has also been active in community service, volunteering at the Bennion Center, Habitat for Humanity, the YWCA, and the Utah Food Bank.

A 1998 graduate with a B.A. in English, Suzanne (Susie) Paxton Flandro is currently publications assistant in the U's development office, where she has helped produce three CASE-award-winning publications. She has been a Planned Parenthood educational volunteer and a teacher's aide for the "School with No Name." Flandro is a member of the Utah Society of Fundraisers and the International Association of Business Communicators.

Paxton R. Guyman received his B.A. in political science (with honors) in 1995 and his J.D. in 1998. He began his legal career as a judicial law clerk for Utah Supreme Court Justice Leonard Russon and is currently an associate attorney with Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, practicing in the areas of complex civil litigation, land use, zoning disputes, and real estate development.

Currently an attorney with Olsen and Olsen, Martin (Marty) Olsen received his B.S. in finance (cum laude) in 1988 and his J.D. in 1991. He is actively involved in community work-with Primary Children's Hospital Child Life Unit, the Village Project, Third District Juvenile Court, Make-A-Wish Foundation, the YWCA, and the Utah Kids Coalition. He also serves on the governing board of the American Bar Association.

A graduate with a B.S. in economics and political science in 1991, Eric S. Petersen also received an MBA from Babson College in Wellesley, Mass., in 1997. He is currently senior associate with D.A. Davidson & Co., an investment banking firm in Salt Lake City. He is affiliated with the Mountain West Venture Group, the Utah Valley Entrepreneurial Forum, and the Utah Information Technology Association.

Since graduating with a B.A. in communications in 1992, Rick Pike has worked as associate producer of sports for KUTV, a reporter for KFAN All-Sports Radio in Salt Lake City, and a sports anchor/reporter for KBAK in Bakersfield, CA. Currently manager of corporate communications with Caldera Systems, Inc., in Orem, he oversees corporate speechwriting, media relations, speaker programs, and execution of strategic public relations plans.

Sheri Seal graduated from the U (cum laude) with a B.S. in accounting in 1989. Currently accounting manager at Ingenix, Inc., she has both her CPA license and Utah real estate license. She also volunteers as a mentor with People Helping People, a community organization that assists single mothers in finding and keeping employment.

Janice Smith received her B.S. in political science in 1995 and her MPA this year. She presently works on the U of U campus as manager of major donor programs for KUED. Before that she was director of development and community relations for the Travelers Aid Society and campaign director for Crusade for the Homeless. She is currently a volunteer with the Junior League of Salt Lake and the Utah Society of Fundraisers.

A 1991 graduate in history, Richard (Rick) C. Webster is currently pursuing his master's degree, also in history. At the same time, he works for First Security Bank in Salt Lake City as assistant account administrator. While at the U, he served as ASUU Homecoming chair and University ombudsman, and volunteered with the Bennion Center.

David J. White is currently a partner/registered representative for Capital Consultants/Securities America. He also owns a property management firm and a computer consulting firm. A 1995 honors graduate in accounting, White presently volunteers at the Mt. Olympus Senior Citizen Center, teaching a weekly class on computer basics and the Internet, and at the Travelers Aid Society, conducting financial planning workshops for residents.
