ALUMNI BULLETIN BOARD

Searching for U of U Alumni

Been mooning over a certain someone you've been longing to find? Want to reunite the old intramural team? To bring alumni from around the globe back together, the Alumni Association is pleased to announce the publication of a commemorative 150th Anniversary Alumni Directory, celebrating the U's sesquicentennial.

Scheduled for release in the fall of 1999, the Alumni Directory will be the most up-to-date and complete reference of more than 170,000 U grads compiled. The comprehensive volume will include current name and former names (if different), plus class year(s) and degree(s) earned from the U. Each biographical listing will also include home address and phone number, and detailed professional information, for those who wish to contact classmates.

This special collector's edition will be offered in both print and CD-ROM formats. The print edition will list alumni alphabetically, by class year, and by geographic region. In addition, all alumni who provide an e-mail address will be listed alphabetically in a separate section to facilitate easy updating of electronic address books. The CD-ROM edition will include all the same biographical data combined with a powerful search engine to allow alumni to find others based on virtually any combination of biographical criteria.

The Alumni Association is working with the Bernard C. Harris Publishing Company, Inc. to produce this special edition. Harris will soon begin researching and compiling the data to be included in the directory by mailing a questionnaire to each alumnus. Please be sure to fill it out and return it quickly. With the participation of all alumni, the 150th Anniversary edition of the U's Alumni Directory is sure to be a great success.

Honors, Laurels, and Assorted Crowns: The Alumni Spring Awards Banquet, April 20

As the Spring semester winds down, the Alumni Association is proud to be able to fete some of the people whose service to the University is distinguished by its excellence. In addition to awards for adjunct faculty, faculty community service, academic advising, and several student scholars, the Par Excellence Award will be presented during the ceremony on April 20 at the new reception area of Rice-Eccles Stadium.

The Par Excellence Award is presented by the Young Alumni Association to an alumnus who has graduated within the last 15 years. Recipients are distinguished by their outstanding service to the University, their community, or their profession. This year's recipient, Robert Flores BA'78 JD'87, a professor at the College of Law, has achieved distinction in all three areas. As a teacher, Flores, who was named the "Rookie Professor of the Year" by litigation students in 1991, conducts courses in civil procedure, civil rights, litigation, and property, and serves a prominent role in recruiting, counseling, and developing financial aid and employment opportunities for minority law students. Professionally, he is a member of a number of law-related organizations and was a founder of the Utah Minority Bar Association. And he has been actively involved in the community since his undergraduate days at the U. He was the executive producer and host of "The Hispanic Review," a weekly Hispanic-oriented public affairs and entertainment television magazine program, and has worked for a number of local housing, education, and journalism organizations.

Previous recipients of the Par Excellence Award include E. Gordon Gee BA'68, Robert Jarvik MD'76, Penny Brooke BS'69 MS'74 JD'84, and Terry Tempest Williams BA'79 MS'84.
