50's Don Randle BS’55 graduated from Western State University College of Law and was admitted to the California Bar. Randle worked 32 years for Arthur Anderson & Co. He retired in 1989.
John F. Dwan BS’59 MA’69, a colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps., has been elected to the Board of Directors of The Retired Officers Association. Commissioned in 1959, Dwan served both overseas and stateside in active duty billets from platoon leader to company executive officer. Since military retirement in 1989, Dwan has served as executive director of public affairs for the University of Utah School of Medicine. He has served as ex-officio member of the Alumni Board and is an elected member of the board of the American Society for Health Care Marketing and Public Relations.
60's Perry F. Miller MS’62 received the 1996 Platinum Award from Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan for his long -standing commitment to the Missouri and American Alliances for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance since 1969. Miller, a resident of Springfield, Mo., is a professor and graduate coordinator for health and physical education at Southwest Missouri State University. He is also a long-time volunteer for the American Heart Association.
Andrew Wahlquist BS’63 was hired as senior vice president for Greenwich Air Services, an independent engine services provider. Wahlquist oversees government business development and government and public relations for the company in Miami, Florida.
Julie Somsen Quayle BA’64 was named Golden Apple Achiever in the teaching profession by Ashland Oil Company, Port Clinton, Ohio. Quayle earned the distinction by exhibiting high professional standards, innovation in teaching, and superlative efforts in community service. She will be included in the 1996 edition of Who's Who Among American Teachers. Quayle teaches junior high language arts and resides in Port Clinton.
Jeff Sillman BA’66 received a doctoral ministry degree from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary last spring in Austin, Texas. Sillman has been pastor of the Mount Olympus Presbyterian Church in Salt Lake City for the past twenty years.
Jeannie Bordenave BS’67 MA’75 MSW’81 received the Social Worker of the Year Award from the Utah chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.
Kenneth R. Cutler BS’67 MBA’68 has been elected vice president of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants. Cutler is chairman of the board and CEO of Interwest Construction in North Salt Lake. He is a member of the Bountiful City Planning commission, a past president of the Bountiful Kiwanis and the Executives Association of Salt Lake City, and is treasurer of the Utah Association for Retarded Citizens.
Harold E. Evans BS’68 was appointed executive vice president of First Data Resources in Omaha, Nebraska. Evans is responsible for client relations, service delivery, product services, and industry relations for the credit processing firm.
70's Mary Kay Griffin BA’70 has been appointed president-elect of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants (UACPA). Griffin is a shareholder in the Salt Lake accounting firm of Foote, Passey, Griffin and Company. She is a member of the Utah State Bonding Commission, the LDS Hospital Deseret Foundation, on the board of the National Abilities Center, and serves on the Community Advisory Council of the Heart /Lung Institute.
Vincent J. Faggioli BS’71 JD’78 has recently been assigned as judge advocate, United Nations Command and Combined Forces Command, as well as staff judge advocate for the Eighth U.S. Army in Korea. A colonel in the U.S. Army, Faggioli is principal legal advisor to U.S. and international forces on the Korean Peninsula, and supervisory attorney for over 60 military and civilian attorneys in Korea. He previously served as special counsel to assistant attorney general at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.
Marion Bodkin BS’72 has started her own computer business after graduating from Northeastern State University. She has recently published two poems in the National Library of Poetry. Bodkin lives in Checotah, Okla.
Susana Viola Jacobsen BFA’72 recently displayed a retrospective, Allegorical Paintings, Old and New, at the Erector Square Gallery in New Haven, Conn. The show included Jacobsen’s work from 1976 to 1996. Her paintings, primarily oil on canvas, are included in collections throughout the country.
Michael T. Skully MBA’72, professor of banking at Monash University in Australia, has published a book called ASEAN Business, Trade and Development. The book was written to assist people interested in doing business in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. In addition to country specific information, topics such as management, marketing, tax, business law, and finance are also covered.
James H. Woodward BA’72 was named a member of the Million Dollar Round Table’s 1996 Honor Roll. The Round Table recognizes the leading life insurance producers in the nation. Woodward is a chartered financial consultant with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company in Salt Lake.
Carl Bullock BS’73 was one of ten members of the Olympic Weather Support Coordinating Committee in Atlanta last summer. Bullock, who earned his master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin in 1978, is a meteorologist at the National Weather Service Forecast Systems Laboratory in Boulder, Colo.
David Calvin Fairbourn BS’73 recently received a master of science degree in chemistry from the University of Cincinnati. He is an advanced manufacturing engineer for GE Aircraft Engines, in Springdale, Ohio, and is currently enrolled in the doctoral program of material science at UC.
S. Craig Omer BS’73 has been appointed president of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants (UACPA). Omer is a partner in the Salt Lake office of KPMG Peat Marwick and a member of the National Advisory Board of the School of Accountancy at Weber State University. He has served on the Advisory Board at Brigham Young University and is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Community Counseling Center.
Kerry G. Judd BS’75 has been appointed non-practicing director of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants (UACPA). Judd is a member of The Capital Group in Salt Lake. He is also a member of the Affiliates Committee for the Salt Lake Board of Realtors.
Paul Flatt BS’78 served as one of 35 members of the 1996 Olympic Weather Support Team in Atlanta Ga. last summer. Flatt is the warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service Office in Tucson, Ariz.
Jeff T. Rolan BS’78 was recently inducted into the Crimson Club Hall of Fame. In 1975, Rolan became only the third man in NCAA history to swim the 100-yard butterfly in under 49 seconds. At the same meet, he won the 100-yard butterfly, placed in three other events, and set a record for his leg of the freestyle relay. Rolan went on to win three events at the WAC championships in 1976 and broke his own butterfly record in 1977. He received All-America honors in both 1976 and 1977. After graduating, Rolan swan on the U.S. National Team and then went on to coach swimming at Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake. He is currently an eighth grade science teach and continues to be involved in swimming on a community level.
Jeannine Pappas Timothy BA’78 JD’85 delivered the eulogy at a memorial service held by the Hellenic Cultural Association (HCA) in honor of all Salt Lake community Greeks who have died in the armed forces. Timothy, a Salt Lake attorney, is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Association.
Donald Anderson MA’79, director of creative writing at the United States Air Force Academy in Colo., has received the 1996-97 Creative Writers’ Fellowship Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Of the 1,069 finalists, only 21 recipients were named. Anderson’s fiction has appeared in the North American Review, Fiction International, PRISM International, and Western Humanities Review. His most recent book is Aftermath: An Anthology of Post- Vietnam Fiction.
80's Ronda Roberts Callister MBA’80 received one of six national dissertation awards from State Farm Insurance after completing her doctorate at the University of Missouri. Her dissertation is about mediating conflict between health care providers and managed health care organizations.
Candace Goldstein BS’81 recently completed a program in diagnostic medical sonography. She works at Kaiser Permanente and Scripps Encinta’s Hospital in La Jolla, California. She also studies Ayurvedic medicine at the Chopra Center.
Galen R. Jones BS’82 moved back to Salt Lake after living and working in California for ten years. He is living in Salt Lake with his wife and two daughters. Jones work’s at the University Hospital in the blood and marrow transplant program.
Clayton K. Vetter BA’83, a nationally ranked and recognized debate coach at Skyline High School, received a national Pathfinder Award from the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Teacher Network. Pathfinders are teachers who make a significant contribution to ending homophobia and fulfilling GLSTN’s mission statement of "teaching respect for all".
Lisa-Michele Church JD’84 has been appointed as Corporate Counsel for Sinclair Oil Corporation in Salt Lake. She will serve as the chief legal counsel for Sinclair and its related entities, Little America Hotel, Sun Valley Company, and Snowbasin. Church serves on the Third District Judicial Nominating Commission, the Dixie College Board of Trustees. She is a past president of Women Lawyers of Utah which named her Woman Lawyer of the Year for 1996.
Thomas M. Pope BA’87 received his teaching certificate from the Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash. Pope will teach art for grades K through 12.
90's Salvatore Frederico PhD’90, professor of French at the American Graduate School of International Management, in Arizona, published two new books, Cas Pratiques pour le Franais des Affaires and French Case Studies. He is regional vice-president of Sigma Iota, an international language honors society.
Bel-Ami Jean De Montreux JD’91 published a new collection of French poetry titled La Chanson de Bel-Ami. At the U, Montreux edited the Utah Foreign Language Review and the Neo- Analyst. He also wrote for the Daily Utah Chronicle. Montreux is a practicing attorney at the Montreux Law Offices in Salt Lake.
Jody M. Becker BS’93 was named a 1996 Outstanding Young Alumni by the Graduate School of Social Work. The award honors her work with the aged who have lifelong disabilities and with disabled Native Americans. She helped establish a social club for the elderly called After Hours. Becker also organized a cultural encounter program which conne cts Utahns with disabilities to aging Native Americans on Navajo Reservations. She lives in Mexican Hat, Utah.
Jeffrey M. Place BA’93 graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Mass. where he served as executive editor of The Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy and was President of the Harvard Federalist Society. He is a clerk for Judge James B. Loken of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and plans to joins the Kansas City law firm of Spencer Fane Britt & Browne as an associate this summer.
Skye Mendenhall BS’95 recently joined the Peace Corps. She is stationed in Cameron, West Africa, serving as an agroforestry extension agent. She trains farmers in nursery establishment, erosion prevention, and soil fertility management.
